The 2020 Sacagawea (Native American) Dollar (Buy on eBay) pays tribute to Elizabeth Peratrovich, a champion of equality for Alaskan Natives. A member of the Tlingit nation and the Grand President of the Alaska Native Sisterhood, her advocacy played a pivotal role in the enactment of Alaska’s Anti-Discrimination Law in 1945, making it the inaugural state or territorial anti-discrimination law in the United States.
The obverse of the coin maintains the portrait of Sacagawea and her infant son Jean Baptiste Charbonneau, featuring the inscriptions “LIBERTY” and “IN GOD WE TRUST.” This design, created by Glenna Goodacre, has been featured on the coin since 2000, with the reverse design rotating each year since 2009 as part of the Native American Dollar series.
On this year’s reverse, you’ll find a depiction of Elizabeth Peratrovich alongside the symbol of the Tlingit Raven moiety, one of the descent groups within the Tlingit community of Southeast Alaska. Crafted by Phebe Hemphill, the inscriptions include “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “ELIZABETH PERATROVICH,” “$1,” and “ANTI-DISCRIMINATION LAW OF 1945.”
Starting on February 12, 2020, the United States Mint commenced the acceptance of orders for products containing the 2020 Native American Dollars. These offerings included 25-coin rolls, 100-coin bags, and 250-coin boxes containing coins of circulating quality sourced from the Philadelphia or Denver Mints. It’s important to note that these coins were not distributed for general circulation but were struck in quantities based on collector demand. The final production tally reached 1.4 million pieces from the Philadelphia Mint and 1.26 million pieces from the Denver Mint.
Proof versions of the 2020 Native American Dollar struck at the San Francisco Mint were also available for collectors and were featured inside the annual proof sets.
