The 2019 Sacagawea (Native American) Dollar (Buy on eBay) celebrated the theme of “American Indians in the Space,” recognizing the significant contributions made by Native Americans in U.S. space endeavors. These contributions ranged from the pioneering work of Mary Golda Ross, a member of the Cherokee Nation, to the remarkable spacewalks performed by John Herrington, a member of the Chickasaw Nation.
On the obverse side of the coin, the portrait of Sacagawea cradling her infant son, a creation by Glenna Goodacre, remains unchanged. It includes the inscriptions “LIBERTY” and “IN GOD WE TRUST.”
The reverse side showcases engineer Mary Golda Ross engaged in calculations alongside an Atlas-Agena rocket ascending into space, with an equation etched within the cloud. An astronaut symbolizes Native American astronauts, including John Herrington. The design was brought to life by Emily Damstra and sculpted by Joseph Menna. The remaining inscriptions feature “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “$1.”
Beginning on February 13, 2019, the United States Mint made available the 2019 Native American Dollars in various formats, such as 25-coin rolls, 100-coin bags, and 250-coin boxes. These high-quality coins were minted at either the Philadelphia or Denver Mint facilities and were not intended for general circulation. The Philadelphia issue had a final production count of 1,400,000 pieces, while the Denver issue totaled 1,540,000 pieces.
In addition, Proof versions of the 2019 Native American Dollar were struck at the San Francisco Mint, and were featured inside the 2019 Proof Set and the 2019 Silver Proof Set.
The United States Mint also offered the 2019 Native American $1 Coin & Currency Set on July 24, 2019. This product included an Enhanced Uncirculated 2019 Native American Dollar struck at the Philadelphia Mint and one 2017 Series Federal Reserve $1 Note produced by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing. This special product was limited to production of 50,000 units.
