The 2018 Sacagawea (Native American) Dollar (Buy on eBay) commemorates James Francis “Jim” Thorpe, a well-known and revered individual celebrated for his extraordinary versatility in the world of contemporary sports. Thorpe’s roots can be traced to Indian Territory, where he grew up as a member of the Sac and Fox Tribe. His exceptional athletic abilities came to light while he was a student at the Carlisle Indian Industrial School in Pennsylvania. Following a remarkable college sports career, he went on to secure two Olympic gold medals and pursued professional careers in football, baseball, and basketball.
The obverse side showcases a portrait of Sacagawea and her child, an artwork crafted by Glenna Goodacre. This side bears the inscriptions “LIBERTY” and “IN GOD WE TRUST.”
On the reverse side, you’ll find an image of Jim Thorpe, with prominent references to his accomplishments in football and the Olympics in the foreground. An inscription includes his native name, “WA-THO-HUK,” which translates to “Bright Path.” Additional inscriptions on this side include “JIM THORPE,” “$1,” and “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” all masterfully designed by Michael Gaudioso.
