The original Sacagawea Dollar obverse design continued to be paired with an annually rotating reverse design for the Native American $1 Coin Program. The latest reverse design honored the contributions of Native American Code Talkers of World War I and World War II.
The 2016 Sacagawea (Native American) Dollar (Buy on eBay) reverse design by Thomas D. Rogers Sr. featured the image of two soldier’s helmets with feathers behind arranged in the shape of a “V.” The helmets are in the style of World War I and World War II helmets and the “V” symbolizes “Victory.” The inscriptions read “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “WWI,” “WWII,” “CODE TALKERS,” and the denomination “$1.”
From the 12,000 Native Americans serving in the U.S. military during World War I and the 44,000 serving during World War II, hundreds played a vital role in communications by using their native languages to develop secret battle codes. These codes, which proved unbreakable to the enemy, were used to transmit important information such as troop movements and enemy locations. The efforts of these Native American Code Talkers have been recognized within a series of Congressional Gold Medals as well as the 2016 Native American Dollar.
On January 27, 2016, the United States Mint began sales of the 2016 Native American Dollars within 25-coin rolls, 100-coin bags, and 250-coin boxes. Each product option contained circulating quality examples of the coins from either the Philadelphia or Denver Mint. The rolls or canvas bags were marked with the face value of the contents, the date, and the mint of origin. Sales for the products continued throughout the calendar year.
Other products were also offered containing this year’s Native American Dollar. The annual proof sets contained a Proof quality version of the coin. The 2016 American $1 Coin and Currency Set contained an Enhanced Uncirculated version of the coin struck at the San Francisco Mint together with a low serial number $1 Federal Reserve Note. This product was released on June 16, 2016 and priced at $14.95, with a production limit of 75,000 pieces.
